Thread Locked[edit]

The Cardan Lift thread is locked, so I can't reply to your question. Can't see any reason, so I'm guessing accident? Torso (talk) 08:20, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

I've unlocked it. Don't know why it got locked. --ToaMeiko (talk) 17:51, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, ToaMeiko. I tried earlier today and found I didn't have an option to open the thread, so I suspect I didn't have permission to close it either. Have no idea. ALITTLESlow: t/c 20:11, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
You should have permission to as you have the same rights on the wiki as I do. It appears as a lock/unlock icon near the edit button in forums. --ToaMeiko (talk) 20:44, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
Ah! Must have missed it both when I was looking for it, and when I wasn't. I posted the last message from my smartphone, and probably hit the lock button by mistake. ALITTLESlow: t/c 21:45, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

As this project moves closer to being ready for launch, it'd be a good time to start deciding how we'll want this wiki to look visually. Right now the barebones unmodified Refreshed skin doesn't accentuate to site's content very much. Are there any color schemes you have in mind, background images you want to use, and/or a logo idea? I can help design it with any resources you already have in mind, or I can start making something from scratch if you'd like. --ToaMeiko (talk) 22:36, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

That's a great offer! I had been waiting to solicit the GBC community's help in a limited announcement once the DNS is working. (I was motivated to do the favicon because I had so many Brickimedia tabs open in my browser I was having trouble finding the gbc tab.) To answer your question directly:
  • I don't have a color scheme in mind. Personally I always end up on earth tones, but I doubt that's best for this site. I think I should leave that to better judgement. The original greatballcontraption.com looked like this, so that may be a good start.
  • I like the tonal quality of the original background image, but I'm not crazy about the gear motif. It doesn't distinguish GBC from other Technic. But neither do I have a better idea. Perhaps an endless sea of soccer balls? I know someone who has enough to capture some good raw images. I won't see him until mid-March, though. Maybe I have enough. I'll take a look in a bit.
  • I'm even more at a loss for a logo. Again I was going to solicit the community. I know I want something that provokes imagination rather than channeling thought. Probably something abstract rather than an exemplar. ALittleSlow (talk) 01:14, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
Pushing 13 images of dirty soccer balls to the above Dropbox link. Have your way with them. (and signinging [sigh]) ALittleSlow (talk) 02:08, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
  • The only color that comes to mind besides a boring gray would be orange, like the color of basketball pieces.
  • An image like this could be made with soccer ball pieces. I don't have enough to take that kind of picture but I could bring a macro lens to BrickFair to get the image.
  • Cool I'll take a look at them after I get out of class today. --ToaMeiko (talk) 16:10, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

I've mocked up a design for the Refreshed skin in my personal CSS and JS pages. You can try them out yourself by adding this to your user JS page:

The logo is mainly just a placeholder, but if you like it we can keep it or improve on it. As far as the colors for the skin go, I wanted a bright color for the header primarily because great ball contraptions often have some bright colors in them, and it really livens up the interface. I went with the yellow-orange because the basketballs, a piece common to GBCs, are orange, however using that shade of orange is a bit too offsetting for a part of the interface in my opinion. I went with a more yellow shade because it can draw attention, but still flows with the rest of the the interface. Yellow seems to be a fairly common color in GBCs and Technic models in general as well. For the background, I went with a dark color because it contrasts with the white content section, and draws more attention to the content section than to the sidebar. The sidebar links however stand out plenty-well on the plain dark background without a background image. The exact dark color of the background is actually copied from the Technic website, but I felt the very dark blue shade goes well with the yellow-orange. Overall I did try to make the color scheme look fresh, modern, and stylish, as Technic, and GBCs too, have come a long way lately, and I wanted to move past the more basic look with grey as a primary color. If you have any comments, let me know. If you want to implement these changes, you can copy the content from my personal CSS/JS to the corresponding MediaWiki pages. Regards, ToaMeiko (talk) 04:54, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks! I do like the color scheme. It's sharper than the default. Has movement. Reminds me of basketball. I've gone ahead with it. The logo looks positively electric next to the other wiki logos in the wiki drop-down list. I do think it needs some more background texture or something.
I haven't been using Refreshed myself because there's no tools menu. Is it accessible from that skin, or how do we bring it back? ALITTLESlow: t/c 13:03, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
Oh, I just found it. I don't like it there. It should be on the navigation sidebar. It wastes space where it is and it's not intuitive (at least for me!). How hard is it to move? ALITTLESlow: t/c 13:09, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
Not sure how you'd move it. And I did try adding a background texture--a faint LEGO soccer ball image, I'll try taking a new one as soon as I can to meet that need. --ToaMeiko (talk) 18:25, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

I've also been working on some template styles which you can see at User:ToaMeiko/Sandbox and by loading mw.loader.load('//greatballcontraption.com/index.php?title=User:ToaMeiko/common.css&action=raw&ctype=text/css','text/css'); --ToaMeiko (talk) 18:42, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

Any change I could possibly get temporary adminship here to continue to set these sorts of things up? I'm also on #brickimedia IRC is you want to chat. --ToaMeiko (talk) 18:42, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

More setup questions[edit]

  • Do you want to utilize the user points/ranks feature of SocialProfile, seen at Special:TopUsers? The ranks can be customized to any titles you want, such as those seen at Brickipedia. If you have any ideas of the order of ranks and the point intervals needed to obtain a rank, as well as how many points should be earned by which actions (actions include editing content pages, commenting, etc), let me know and I can set it up. :)
  • I remember you said you didn't like the placement of Refreshed's toolbox links. We could add some of the more useful (and not page-specific) ones such as Special:Upload to the sidebar if it helps.
  • Do you think Meta needs any extra license templates for uploaded files pertaining to GBC images? I don't know where most GBC images are hosted, but if you think it'd be necessary (or just good to have), license templates for images from Flickr, Mocpages, etc could be created.
  • On meta:Small wikis, you added this wiki. Do you want to keep it that way? If so I'll add the small wiki configuration to the site's LocalSettings file. All this will do is allow a global group of small wiki administrators to also perform administrator tasks on this wiki. There currently are no active small wiki administrators, so this wouldn't make much of a difference at all.
  • Do you want me to create pages for user groups that are currently red links on Special:ListGroupRights? Are there any groups that you might want changed/removed/merged?

I'll probably have more setup related questions as we move along, but I wanted to leave these here while I could think of them. --ToaMeiko (talk) 04:18, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for all you've done so far!
  • TopUsers: yes, but I'll have to think about the ranks. Don't know that the community has a lot a jargon to draw from. Probably the default or en point system is sufficient for now.
  • sidebar: yes, that's a good idea for the more useful ones.
  • license templates: Flickr and MOCPages might be helpful, yes. The Creative Commons-Attribution (CC BY) license needs to be added. Maybe the other CC licenses, too?
  • small wiki: I didn't really understand the implications of the category, but we seem to fit the description. It's probably not necessary, but also don't think it would hurt, especially if I get hit by a bus or something.
  • user groups: the extraneous groups don't bother me much. My general intention was to impose only as much structure as is needed, when needed, and no more. Unless there are reasons to remove them, having them available to use when needed might be a benefit. I don't know enough to have a preference for changing any of them.

other video options?[edit]

Videoflash is not well behaved. The Mediawiki extension page even says to avoid using it because of security holes, if I remember correctly. GBC really needs videos, though. Are there other video extensions available? ALITTLESlow: t/c 16:59, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

I found Extension:YouTube, which would presumably work. It appears to be used on every ShoutWiki wiki, so it's probably stable and secure. Would you prefer that one? If you want to test it out beforehand you could find a ShoutWiki wiki page to test it on. --ToaMeiko (talk) 19:02, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
That should work. ALITTLESlow: t/c 04:48, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

Is there anything you'd like assistance with? Codyn329 (talk) 01:31, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

absolutely! Depends what you like to do.
× Talk to TaoMeiko about css issues.
× stub some articles.
Also look at the community forum. I put some thoughts there. Thanks! ALITTLESlow: t/c 03:12, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
Okeydokey, I'll try to get right onto those topics. Also, I looked at your to do list and it said "fix seabreeze(?) skin". I assume you meant Deepsea? I went ahead and redesigned it so it looks like the default (Refreshed) skin on this wiki. You can go to User:ALittleSlow/deepsea.js and add the line
mw.loader.load( '//greatballcontraption.com/index.php?title=User:Codyn329/deepsea.css&action=raw&type=text/css', 'text/css' );
Then press publish. To view the deepsea skin, just append the query useskin?= with the value of 'deepsea' (e.g useskin?=deepsea) at the end of a URL. For example, to view the deepsea skin on the main page you can go to http://greatballcontraption.com/wiki/Main_Page?useskin=deepsea.
If you like the results, you can add it publicly to MediaWiki:Deepsea.css by replacing the current code with the new code.
In case you don't have time I also provided a screenshot of the skin [1]. Hope this helps =) Codyn329 (talk) 17:53, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
I was wondering if you wanted a new deepsea wiki logo temporarily because the current one, to be honest, looks poorly cropped? :P I made one that's not transparent (yet) but here it is on the right. Codyn329 (talk) 19:09, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
I edited you message to include a better method for him to load your CSS, Cody. Hope you don't mind. As for your logo, it's nice, but I would rather it have some consistency with the Refreshed logo. I also don't like the use of the Exo font. Exo is not a font I particularly like, at least not use in design, and it also doesn't particularly fit the goal I had with the Refreshed GBC logo. The thick font width and italics were inspired from the b:Soccer theme's logo, and then given a bit of uniqueness in the font character design. --ToaMeiko (talk) 19:53, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
Oh, I like DeepSea so much better than Refreshed. Thank you! I copied your deepsea.css to MediaWiki:. Yes, that was my hatchet job on the logo. I just put it up there to have something. Looks like you trimmed it up a bit? With it overflowing it's frame, reminds me of a harvest moon. Your logo is an improvement over mine. I would like to see more depth or motion (I'm picturing a Calvin and Hobbes rolling snowball at the moment), and the thickness of the circle seems heavy. I like ToaMeiko's idea of matching the logo font. That said, I sure prefer it over mine. ALITTLESlow: t/c 22:22, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, you can go to Special:Preferences, go to skin, and check Deepsea off as your default skin if you'd like (make sure to also press save.) I think George (Meiko) trimmed it himself actually before you responded. Also yeah, I agree with what he said. Question, are the titles of the articles all conjectural or official? Codyn329 (talk) 00:01, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
Since LEGO has never made any GBC-related sets or products, everything about GBCs is made by fans, so nothing is really "official". The titles would be what the names given by the fans or what the fans use to refer to things most often. And since this is a fan site, if anything doesn't have a colloquial title, we can give it one, and essentially that becomes the title it'll be known by. Basically the same way as terms like "AFOL", since that was just something people on forums started using and became something everyone in the community knows. --ToaMeiko (talk) 00:17, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Exactly right. The only "canonical" reference I have is http://www.teamhassenplug.org/GBC, but in general I try to use what other fans are calling things. In some cases (e.g. Integrated GBC) I don't know of any other term so I have to coin one. ALITTLESlow: t/c 00:38, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Made a new logo for DeepSea, Vector, and other skins. :) --ToaMeiko (talk) 02:03, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Looks great! Although on the vector skin, the fading gradient can't be really seen since it's white-on-white. Could you perhaps change the gradient to something else, perhaps maybe a dark blue like on refreshed (#001722)? Codyn329 (talk) 02:14, 11 March 2015 (UTC) Edit: Not that I actually use Vector skin, but I'm sure there's a few users that do
Agree! ALITTLESlow: t/c 03:15, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
A dark blue or black motion blur coming from a white object doesn't really make any sense visually. I already tried it before the logo was uploaded and found it to look unnatural. Perhaps Vector can be recolored here at some point, or just ignore it as its very minor. More important setup tasks still need doing that appear on default settings; let's not be worrying about non-default features right now. --ToaMeiko (talk) 02:54, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
That's true, I agree with all of your points. Codyn329 (talk) 02:59, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
I know we shouldn't worry right now but if we want to in the future we can use mw:Skin:Vector-DarkCSS as a base and modify it. Codyn329 (talk) 18:15, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

"Image box"[edit]

I typed up some nice CSS code to style images (so it replaces those gray dull boxes with something a bit nicer):

div.thumbinner {
  border: 0;
  background: #001722;
  color: #fff;
  border-radius: 20px;

html .thumbimage {
  border: 0;
  border-radius: 17px;

If you want to you, you can add it. I'm not sure if that's exactly what you meant since you just said "image boxes" (source) and I was a bit confused. Did you meant like infoboxes such as at ideas:Template:Project or b:Template:Set? If you want, I can create some infobox templates if needed. Codyn329 (talk) 23:14, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

That is the effect I was after. At the time I wrote that, I didn't realize how much functionality File: had built in, and thought we would need a template to get there. I'll probably not be tweaking CSS myself much. You and Toa are much better at it, and I should probably focus on content. ALITTLESlow: t/c 00:21, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
Are we using this style or a style like the video on Main Page? --ToaMeiko (talk) 21:27, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
I rather like the "roundtangle". Also I really don't like the purplish background color I set for the video frame. Not sure what I was thinking. ALITTLESlow: t/c 15:13, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Community discussion[edit]

I really do like getting mail, but it seems the topics here may be outgrowing my talk page. Should we move design discussions to Community Discussion? The only problem with that is, as far as I know, WikiForum doesn't support e-mail notifications. Even worse, the recent topics list on the Main Page doesn't stay recent. I've been using VisualPing to monitor Special:Log/forum, and it's working well. ALITTLESlow: t/c 15:22, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

For community-specific/general questions and topics, yeah. If you have any technical things or individual requests, you can leave them on mine or Cody's talk pages. --ToaMeiko (talk) 21:01, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

RE - Image box[edit]

I can fix it but I don't have direct access to it - Just change the color value to #222 instead of #fff on the .thumbinner class at User:ToaMeiko/common.css. (You can edit other people's personal css files as an administrator but I'd say you should ask ToaMeiko first to fix it? / If not, just put in the edit summary that you're fixing a small bug and mark it as a minor edit)

The ending result of changing it should look like:

.thumbinner {
	border: 0;
	background: #001722;
	color: #222;
	border-radius: 20px;

Hope this helps ^_^ Codyn329 (talk) 19:50, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Wondering if you know something about this github issue? It looks like we don't have access to retrieve data from another server, aka greatballcontraption.com since its a different domain. Codyn329 (talk) 19:58, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

push/bumping in case this hasn't been seen yet Codyn329 (talk) 01:37, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
It's not another server, but it's a different domain and thus the current method for getting data from it will never work. See also: http://www.w3.org/TR/cors/ --ToaMeiko (talk) 18:04, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
something must be up with my notifications. Short answer is that I know nothing about it. ALITTLESlow: t/c 23:11, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

Busy again[edit]

I'm busy doing a built on a tight deadline. I'll still be around, but you might have to shout to get my attention. ALITTLESlow: t/c 18:02, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

I'm back. ALITTLESlow: t/c 00:23, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

Hey, sorry for not helping out lately, to be completely honest I haven't been paying attention to this wiki as much as I should be. I'm here to help now though, so I just wanted to let you know. :) Codyn329 (talk) 08:32, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Good to hear from you! Is there a way to refresh Special:LonelyPages? I've tried a couple times and found no answer.
Also, the forum list on the Main_Page page only seems to refresh when the main page itself is modified. Any way to fix that? ALITTLESlow: t/c 22:16, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
Hey, from what I know, the problem should be the cache. It's pretty slow and the server isn't the best. You can try pressing Ctrl + F5, Shift + F5, or Ctrl + Shift + R to clear the cache but it might not be immediate, so you'll probably have to do it multiple times. Maybe report on GitHub? Codyn329 (talk) 23:45, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

So on the topic of comings and goings, the next couple of months are going to be rather busy for me (though that's largely of my own making, having taken on a lot of stuff). I should be able to keep on top of patrolling new edits, but I may not contribute much new text myself. Captainowie (talk) 14:10, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

When I made that edit back in July, I had a bunch of things on. I've recently finished the last of those things, and was looking forward to a bit of quite time before I got busy again. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to have happened and my to-do list is as large as ever. Said list includes finding and purchasing a new home, a cross-country move, and organising what may well be the biggest GBC layout Australia has ever seen. Expect limited contributions from me until at least February. Captainowie (talk) 11:49, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

Can I talk to you if I'm anonymous?[edit]

I wonder if this will post. Really I'm tested CAPTCHAs, though. 03:47, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

Missing forum??[edit]

Hi Brian.

The Recent Changes log tells me that a couple of days ago you created a topic in the forum with tips on how to use said forum. There seems to be something wrong with it - I can see where it's supposed to go in the Wiki help discussion board, but there's just an empty space where the link should be. Do you know what might be up with that? I've tried purging the forum page, but that hasn't helped.

Something went horribly wrong while I was editing the post. Now I can't delete it. ALITTLESlow: t/c 04:28, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi Brian.

I'm putting this here vs in the forum or somewhere, because I think I read somewhere that you get email notifications for these. There seems to have been a fair bit of (presumably bot-related) vandalism - new articles - in the last week or so. Perhaps you could get someone to take a look at that?

Sorry for dropping off the map. Did a surprise job change and relocation. Still. In transition. I'll look into it when I can. --ALITTLESlow: t/c 18:06, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
