A stair lift uses series of vertically oscillating ledges or steps, each successive one being higher than its neighbor. The first step lifts a ball out of the in-basket. At the top of its travel the ball rolls onto the next step. And the process repeats. Steps are usually lifted from underneath by cams on a central drive shaft.
